SPECIESOur flag ship species is the Cape Griffon vulture (Gyps coprotheres). This is the most endangered species in Namibia, but we are now doing ground breaking work with Cape Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii). REST's educational work continues with the Damara Dik Dik, the African Painted Dog, … etc.

ABOUTREST is a World Leader in Vulture and Pangolin Conservation and Education.

REST is a non-profit organization founded in September 2000 by Maria Diekmann. Their new headquarters are located 47 km south of Otjiwarongo, Namibia. Maria considers herself a conservationist first and a scientist second, but believes both are vital to REST's work. Many of the world’s top experts are on her scientific board and give advice on major environmental decisions. REST began by helping only the plight of the Cape Griffon vulture, but after a few years it became apparent that there were a more species that needed specific support in Namibia. Thus the start of the “Forgotten Five” began which has developed into the Forgotten 5 +1. These animals represent biodiversity within the entire land ecosystem of Namibia.
REST has developed and is now implementing an ambitious and coordinated program aimed at conserving the last remaining Cape Griffon population in Namibia. The organization was the first organization in Africa to put satellite telemetry on vultures and have since has help publish many scientific papers on their discoveries. After the successful capture of over 1,000 vultures – with no injuries – REST is now advising researchers and conservation groups around the world on how best to capture these amazing birds.
Within the past year, REST has had a very unique opportunity to raise an abandoned baby Cape pangolin. He is only the 3rd of his kind to be raised successfully in captivity. Pangolin are very shy and elusive animals and do not generally do well in captive situations. ...
